Alright Folks. Quick One! For all y'all that came to Thursday Salsa@Nicon Luxury yesterday, we had mad fun with our Ghanaian Brothers visiting Abuja for an event and collabo performance with 'Salsa Abuja". Whether you were there or not, the fun continues with The After Party of the Event officially declared a Salsa Fiesta. Featuring the No 1 - Salsa DJ in Ghana; DJ Cosby, Josh - Ghana's very own "Salsa Apostle" , Ghanaian with Nigerian Blood - Alston of Footsteps Dance International and our own very Dare Salsa Abuja would be there too either Djayin and Dancing whatever.

Okay guys, there's just been a lot that has happened over the past few months. Some of us were party to this and some not. This includes Dare's visit to the U.S., attending the New York International Salsa Congress - Aug 2008., hosting a Salsa Workshop at Radiance Studios, Bowling Green, OH, U.S.A. and attending Tiempo Libre (Two-Time Grammy Nominated Miami based Cuban Band) :and the Toledo Symphony in Concert- Sept 2008.

Other events were the 2008 West African Nite of Salseros in Ghana, Abuja Salsa Santa Fiesta and the Blue & White Salsa to mark the new year.

Salsa goes Whao! as Nigerians storm Ghana for the West African Nite of Salseros. Held Sat, 15th Dec 2007, at the GoodFellas Bar in Accra. Featuring various performances and social dancing, the nite was crowned with the Presence of Tatiana; Big Brother Africa 2 Housemate all the way from Angola. AbujaClubSalsa wasn't left out as Dare was there live flagging the Abuja Salsa Community. The code was 'dance till you drop'. Who knows, this might just be the birth of a real African Salsa Congress. Viva La Salsa, Viva Ghana, Viva Nigeria, Viva Africa.

Having being a dancer of prestigious companies before forming "Compañía Fernando Hurtado" , Choreographer & Spanish dancer of contemporary dance, Fernando Hurtado had participated in numerous choreographic contests, obtaining in 2001 the First Prize of the Choreographic Contest of Madrid and in 2002 the First Prize of the Choreographic Contest Andalusian for the Contemporary Dance and in the past year was granted a scholarship by the Foundation Author to make a stay in the Movement Research and Dance Space of New York. As part of their current activities,all the way from Spain, are headed towards Africa. A tour of four weeks in which we they will visit Malabo and Bata in Guinea, Abuja in Nigeria and Kinshasa in the
Democratic Republic of the Congo brings them in cultural cooperation with the spanish embassy to the doorstep of ABUJA CLUB SALSA from the 2nd - 6th of July, 2007. In a time which they
will present "Quisiera borrarte de un suspiro" (Wanted borrarte of a sigh), they will be facilitating a contemporary dance workshop for us and in turn enjoy a personal experience of interchange and knowledge, in which they have open minds to other forms of life, and it is sure
other forms to dance.

The Word: SALSA!!

The use of the word salsa originated in the 1960's in New York where music labels took the spicy cultural connotation of the word which also means hot sauce to market various Latino music genres/variety of music from several countries of Hispanic influence: Rumba, Són montuno, Guaracha, Mambo, Cha Cha, Cha, Danzón, Són, Guaguanco, Cubop, Guajira, Charanga, Cumbia, Plena, Bomba, Festejo, Merengue, among others. Many of these have maintained their individuality & many were mixed creating Salsa.

Izzy Sanabria who worked as a graphic designer at Fania Records (which was then regarded as the Latin Motown MC'd for the Fania All Stars Band & produced the influential Latin NY Magazine chose the word Salsa to group together/capture the imagination of the various Latin sensations whilst developing an easier to sell concept/make marketing easier.

Prior to this, words like "Candela" (Fire), "Salsa" (Sauce), "Sabroso" (Tasty), "Azucar" (Sugar) had existed as music metaphors/exclamations used to cue in the changing phases in the music especially in the 'montuno' (more rhythmic/percussive phase /section highest in rhythm and energy). Salsa was and remains an expression of greater energy and excitement.

Izzy's idea worked & through his efforts, Latin music experienced a revival; that is until the Fania All Stars performed at the Cheetah Club in Manhattan which was filmed as "Nuestra Cosa Latina - Our Latin Thing”. The revival became a boom, culminating in the now famous concert at the Yankee stadium to 20,000 people in 1973.

However, the roots of Salsa music & dance reaches further into history than this, to the times when the Cuban slaves from Nigeria still lived in Africa.

Did you know that In pre-revolutionary France, during the reign of King Louis XIV, he established dance as a mechanism of political control. To be high enough in social standing to gain favour, the nobility had to know the latest steps as created by his dance master. Dances at courts were group activities possibly to demonstrate agreememt with the will of the king. New steps were produced very often, leaving the aristocracy with little choice but to leave members of their families at versailles to learn them. Effectively hostages, the family members provided King Louis XIV with the leverage to control the Aristocracy. The King himself was a keen dancer & the jewels of his dance were the minuet and the contredanse.
